Assassin build routes
Start a fire trap route with Fire Blast. Wake of Fire is its chest evolution; Death Sentry belongs to a separate lightning chain. Choose one main line before adding shadows or martial arts.

Opening and progression
- Choose Fire Blast from a fresh trap opening. Max it and hold Faster Cast Rate for Wake of Fire from character level 12.
- Keep Wake of Fire at its evolution rank of 1, add Fade after it unlocks at 18, then open a chest from level 24 for Wake of Inferno.
- For Death Sentry, separately learn Charged Bolt Sentry from 12 and max it. Faster Cast Rate enables Lightning Sentry from 24, then Death Sentry from 30 in a second chest.
- Martial arts can open with Dragon Talon or Tiger Strike. Tiger Strike needs Venom and level 30 to become Phoenix Strike. Dragon Talon instead follows the Dragon Claw/Dragon Tail finisher chain; do not label it a Phoenix Strike evolution.
Evolution prerequisite table
Each row also requires the listed base to be learned to its maximum and a chest after all requirements are met. A target’s unlock level alone does not guarantee that its base can already be maxed.
| Skill to max | Catalyst to hold | Evolution | Earliest character level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire Blast 8 (1) | Faster Cast Rate (1) | Wake of Fire | 12 |
| Wake of Fire 1 | Fade (18) | Wake of Inferno | 24 |
| Charged Bolt Sentry 8 (12) | Faster Cast Rate (1) | Lightning Sentry | 24 |
| Lightning Sentry 1 | Faster Cast Rate (1) | Death Sentry | 30 |
| Tiger Strike 8 (1) | Venom (30) | Phoenix Strike | 30 |
| Shadow Warrior 8 (18) | Weapon Block (12) | Shadow Master | 30 |
Alternatives and Hell / Terror boundaries
If fire is blocked, work toward the separate lightning chain or another damage type rather than expecting Wake of Fire to become Death Sentry. A second line costs skill slots and learned ranks.
Faster Cast Rate accelerates trap placement, not the firing speed of traps already placed. Elemental traps scale with Energy rather than weapon Attack Damage; shadow attacks use their own weapon-based rules.
Charge-up skills build up to three charges and release their own three-charge effect on the fourth attack. Dragon Talon, Dragon Claw, Dragon Tail and Dragon Flight release all held charge-up skills. Pair charges with a finisher when planning the loop.
Fade unlocks at 18 and Weapon Block at 12; Shadow Master needs its own level-30 evolution. These are later additions, not guaranteed opening protection. The 2.70× Terror multiplier includes traps, shadow and mercenary; it establishes no verified floor or class ranking.
Slot and survival budget
Normal has 6 skill slots and 6 passive slots; Nightmare has 8 of each and Hell 10 of each. Continuing past Baal adds 2 of each. An evolution replaces its base in the same slot. Do not plan all alternatives below as simultaneous picks.
Nightmare applies a -40 resistance penalty and Hell -100. Review the character sheet before advancing. No fixed gear list, clear time, Terror floor or final DPS is established by these routes.
How to use these routes
These are editorial routes assembled from the official skill rules, not tested endgame loadouts. The mechanics below have one publisher: the official D2 Survivors wiki. Its class, skill-systems and numbers pages are not independent sources.
Max an ordinary base skill at 8 learned ranks, hold its catalyst and meet both level requirements, then open a chest. An evolution arrives at its maximum of 1 rank; its next step needs another catalyst and another chest, not eight more ranks. Item +skills do not substitute for learned ranks. Each chest evolves one ready skill.
The tables give the earliest rule-based character level, including the base rank cap and catalyst unlock where relevant; card availability can delay it. A skill cannot exceed character level minus its unlock level plus one. Keep a passive slot for your catalyst and avoid banishing it. These opening instructions apply when choosing a fresh level-1 build; check your existing banked hero before changing a later-difficulty plan.
Questions and answers
Does Wake of Fire evolve into Death Sentry?
No. Fire Blast → Wake of Fire → Wake of Inferno is the fire chain. Charged Bolt Sentry → Lightning Sentry → Death Sentry is the lightning chain.
Are these tested endgame builds?
No. These are actionable progression routes derived from one official publisher’s mechanics. They specify prerequisites and alternatives, without a verified final gear set, clear time or Terror floor.
