Barbarian build routes
Double Swing is a legal opening card. Frenzy is its level-24 evolution; Whirlwind is an independent level-30 skill. Build a working melee line before reserving slots for warcries.

Opening and progression
- Take Double Swing for a fresh combat opening and match your mastery to your equipped weapon. A second one-handed weapon goes in the shield slot, but Double Swing and Frenzy also work with one weapon or none.
- Max Double Swing, hold Increased Speed when it opens at 24, and open a chest for Frenzy. Keep the existing attack working while waiting for the catalyst.
- If choosing the Bash route, max Bash with Axe Mastery for Concentrate at 18; Iron Skin then enables Berserk from level 30.
- Learn Whirlwind separately from level 30 if you want it and have a slot. Shout from 6 can evolve into Battle Orders with Vitality at 24, then Battle Command with Find Item at 30.
Evolution prerequisite table
Each row also requires the listed base to be learned to its maximum and a chest after all requirements are met. A target’s unlock level alone does not guarantee that its base can already be maxed.
| Skill to max | Catalyst to hold | Evolution | Earliest character level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Double Swing 8 (1) | Increased Speed (24) | Frenzy | 24 |
| Bash 8 (1) | Axe Mastery (1) | Concentrate | 18 |
| Concentrate 1 | Iron Skin (18) | Berserk | 30 |
| Shout 8 (6) | Vitality (1) | Battle Orders | 24 |
| Battle Orders 1 | Find Item (12) | Battle Command | 30 |
Alternatives and Hell / Terror boundaries
Whirlwind is not a chest upgrade of Frenzy. If level-30 cards or a free slot are unavailable, continue using Frenzy or your other established attack instead of waiting without damage.
The class page says Shout and Battle Orders/Battle Command can occupy separate slots, while skill-systems lists Shout among bases that do not return after evolution. Do not assume a Shout → Battle Orders chest automatically preserves both skills, or promise a re-draft workaround. Their coexistence/acquisition details need clarification from the same official publisher.
Physical Damage Reduced caps at 50% and does not protect against elemental hits. Review resistances as well as melee survivability for Hell; a physical-only plan also needs an answer to physical immunes.
Find Item is a catalyst for Battle Command, not a guaranteed drop improvement for any particular item. The official skill rules do not establish a winning dual-wield versus two-handed loadout or a tested Terror floor.
Slot and survival budget
Normal has 6 skill slots and 6 passive slots; Nightmare has 8 of each and Hell 10 of each. Continuing past Baal adds 2 of each. An evolution replaces its base in the same slot. Do not plan all alternatives below as simultaneous picks.
Nightmare applies a -40 resistance penalty and Hell -100. Review the character sheet before advancing. No fixed gear list, clear time, Terror floor or final DPS is established by these routes.
How to use these routes
These are editorial routes assembled from the official skill rules, not tested endgame loadouts. The mechanics below have one publisher: the official D2 Survivors wiki. Its class, skill-systems and numbers pages are not independent sources.
Max an ordinary base skill at 8 learned ranks, hold its catalyst and meet both level requirements, then open a chest. An evolution arrives at its maximum of 1 rank; its next step needs another catalyst and another chest, not eight more ranks. Item +skills do not substitute for learned ranks. Each chest evolves one ready skill.
The tables give the earliest rule-based character level, including the base rank cap and catalyst unlock where relevant; card availability can delay it. A skill cannot exceed character level minus its unlock level plus one. Keep a passive slot for your catalyst and avoid banishing it. These opening instructions apply when choosing a fresh level-1 build; check your existing banked hero before changing a later-difficulty plan.
Questions and answers
Does Frenzy evolve into Whirlwind?
No. Max Double Swing plus Increased Speed evolves into Frenzy at level 24. Whirlwind is a separate ordinary skill unlocked at 30.
Are these tested endgame builds?
No. These are actionable progression routes derived from one official publisher’s mechanics. They specify prerequisites and alternatives, without a verified final gear set, clear time or Terror floor.
